"A look at Russian history and capitalism"

This article reflects on the history of Russia, focusing on the country's late-20th and early-21st-century development as the Russian Federation. This is characterised as a time of rough capitalism, reminiscent of the industrial revolution of the 19th century. The legacy of centralised authoritarian rule, which was typical of both the czarist and communist eras of Russian history, is described as stronger than any nascent Russian commitment to democracy.
